Program: "Breeding Synodontis Catfish and Loaches" by Sallie Boggs

Sallie Boggs Ph.D. will be speaking about her personal experience breeding Synodontis catfish and loaches.  She has movies, theories and fun for everyone.  Sallie became interested in collecting and breeding tropical fish when she was living in Jamaica BWI as a young teenager.  Since then she completed training and 30 years as a research scientist.  The characteristics common to a scientist and a successful fish breeder are careful observation, willingness to experiment and attention to details.  Evidence that Sallie has these characteristics is the fact that she was the first Grand Master Breeder in her fish club (Greater Pittsburgh Aquarium Society).  She fancies herself as the Jane Goodall of the basement where she practically lives with hundreds of wild fish in about 40 aquariums.  For a while she even kept a hot tub in the fish room to share the experience.  She likes to observe breeding behavior of her fish that no one else has seen (or so she thinks).  Eureka-The feeling of discovery!  Then she likes to record the blessed events and share her excitement in being privileged to make these observations with other fish people.  As a result she has published articles in several fish magazines, and given talks on fish all around the US and Canada.  She’s also a proud Toastmaster.  When asked just how strong is her passion for fish breeding, she answers, "I spent 20 years raising 5 children, 30 years doing stem cell and cancer research and over 50 years breeding and raising fish.  I hope I helped the kids be happy, the research has helped improve human life and information on breeding fish has reduced the stress on wild fish populations while enhancing the enjoyment in the aquarium hobby.
